Hospitals receive ‘hard-fought’ and ‘long overdue’ increase in base funding

Quinte Health will receive $15,654,300 for its four hospitals – an increase in base funding of 7.7 per cent – from the province.

Announcing the increase Friday morning in Belleville, Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith said the funds should lead to more surgeries and shorter wait times.

“In our growing communities, Quinte Health hospitals are being relied upon to deliver increased care volume, while maintaining the high standards patients and families expect,” said Smith. “This significant investment builds upon a trend of increased allocations, ensuring reliable support and capacity to meet our local needs.”

The funding is to help hospitals keep emergency departments open, support inflationary or other wage pressures and reduce wait times for diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures (including MRI, CT, cardiac, stroke, neuro services, orthopedics, and cataracts) so that people can connect to care faster.

Stacey Daub, Quinte Health President and CEO, welcomed the news and said the funding represents a “hard-fought and long overdue step for communities served by Quinte Health.

“While one-time financial gestures have helped offset the ongoing operation of unfunded and underfunded beds necessary to serve our growing and aging population, this new permanent funding is categorically different. This is an important step in an ongoing journey toward establishing the necessary funding levels critical to serve our community,” she stated.

Emergency visits are up by 14 per cent and there is a 42 per cent increase for in-patient medicine stays at the hospitals in Picton, Bancroft, Belleville and Trenton, over the past four years.

Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson was also at the announcement.

“Our local hospital plays a central role in building health and wellness in our community. The staff and physicians at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital do an incredible job providing the best possible care,” he stated. “It’s critically important that investments continue to be made so that our local hospitals can continue to meet the complex and ever-growing health-care needs across the Quinte region.”
