In response to the millions of readers who can’t get enough of crime fiction, thrillers and mystery novels, this year’s International Festival of Authors, Toronto, will also include a special event in Picton highlighting these nail-biting genres as part of this year’s IFOA Noir programming focus.
In Toronto,more than 20 authors will present their latest suspense-inducing works to audiences at 10 IFOA events from Oct. 20-30. Outside Toronto, IFOA Noir events take place in Burlington, Picton and Windsor as part of IFOA Ontario.

Authors Michael Koryta, Emily St. John Mandel and Michael Robotham will read from their latest novels. After a short intermission authors Giles Blunt, Peter Robinson and Louise Welsh will take part in an IFOA Noir round table discussion moderated by James Grainger. The event is presented in partnership with the Prince Edward County Authors Festival. Tickets $15

Giles Blunt is the author of the British Crime Writers’ Macallan Silver Dagger-winning Forty Words for Sorrow; the Arthur Ellis Award-winning A Delicate Storm; Blackfly Season; By the Time You Read This; and the national bestseller Breaking Lorca. He has also written scripts for Law & Order, Street Legal and Night Heat. Blunt’s Crime Machine, the fifth installment in the John Cardinal mystery series, focuses on Cardinal’s investigation into the deaths of two Russian travellers at Algonquin Bay.
James Grainger is a books columnist for the Toronto Star and the author of The Long Slide. He is also the Editor in Chief of Torontoist’s new books site, Books@Torontoist.
The author of five previous novels, Michael Koryta’s work has been translated into more than a dozen languages. His novel, Envy the Night, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery/thriller, and his Lincoln Perry series has earned nominations for the Edgar, Shamus, and Quill awards and won the Great Lakes Book Award. Koryta’s supernatural suspense, So Cold the River, follows one man as he sets out to make a documentary about his father-in-law and winds up facing his demons.
Emily St. John Mandel (Canada/USA) was born on the West Coast of British Columbia and lived briefly in Montreal before relocating to New York. Her lauded first novel, Last Night in Montreal, follows a woman through her compulsive travels while exploring the nature of obsession. Mandel’s highly-anticipated second novel, The Singer’s Gun, is full of suspense, fascinating characters and unusual situations, including international crime, human smuggling, phony identities, and dangerous love.
Peter Robinson (Canada/UK) has received numerous awards for his Inspector Banks novels, including the prestigious Grand Prix de Littérature Policière and several Arthur Ellis Best Novel Awards. In 2002, he was awarded the Dagger in the Library by the British Crime Writers Association. He is also a member of the exclusive Detection Club, founded in 1928 by a group of mystery writers, including Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and G.K. Chesterton. Robinson presents Bad Boy, the latest installment in the Inspector Banks series.
Before turning to writing full-time, Michael Robotham was an investigative journalist in UK, Australia and US. He is the pseudonymous author of 10 bestselling non-fiction titles, involving prominent figures in the military, the arts, sport and science. His novel Lost was awarded the Australian Crime Writers Association’s Ned Kelly Award for Crime Book of the Year. Robotham presents his latest work Bleed For Me, about one man’s hunt for a killer, which leads him to a sensational race-hate trial that captivates England.
Bestselling author of The Cutting Room, Tamburlaine Must Die and The Bullet Trick, Louise Welsh was chosen as one of Britain’s Best First Novelists of 2002 by the Guardian. Her awards include the Crime Writers’ Association Creasey Dagger and the Saltire First Book Award. Welsh presents her latest work, Naming the Bones, which follows a man whose quiet life in university libraries researching the lives of writers is shaken when researching a deceased author leads him to an ancient burial ground where there is at least one person intent on his death.
Help County Reads select book list
The County Reads returns for its second year, following a wildly successful inaugural event.
The Prince Edward County Arts Council-sponsored event is overseen by the council’s Written Word committee, as part of its mandate to
promote the written word as an essential element of the cultural life of Prince Edward County.
The County Reads will take place as part of next year’s Author’s Festival, and the Written Word Committee needs your help in choosing a
long-list of 20 books, and in nominating members of the community who will defend the five chosen books.
The County Reads is an annual event where five local readers each champion a chosen book, and the community votes to pick the book
everyone in the county should read.
This year, county residents will have the opportunity to nominate members of their community to defend a book, and to suggest titles
which will make up the book pool from which defenders will choose one to champion. The committee asks for suggestions of books published
since the year 2000, in a variety of genres, with a focus on Canadian authors; and for nominations of people from our community who are
would enjoy defending their book against other presenters.
