Just hang up on telephone fraud in Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County OPP is warning citizens that telephone frauds are real and happening every day.
“Fraudsters will contact victims who are predominantly seniors and swindle them into providing personal information or having the person transfer large amounts of money to an unspecified account,” said Cst. Patrick Menard, PEC OPP’s safety officer.
“If you are contacted by telephone and the call seems too good to be true; the caller insists they are with Revenue Canada and you owe money; or from ‘banks’ calling to verify personal information to update accounts or a caller stating there is a family member in need of money and to use an outside agency to transfer funds – it’s a scam.”
Menard advises that legitimate business people will be happy to provide information.
“After all, they want the ‘bad guys’ out of business too. Do not provide confidential personal information, especially banking or credit card details over the phone. If you have doubts about a caller, your best defense is to simply hang up. It’s not rude – it’s smart.”
If you’re in doubt, ask the advice of a close friend or relative, or even your banker, in person. Rely on people you can trust.
“Remember, you can Stop Phone Fraud – Just Hang Up.”
