Letter will state a roundabout is needed at County Road 1 and Hwy 62

The County’s Traffic Advisory Committee has requested the municipality write the Ministry of Transportation to seek action to address the dangerous intersection at Hwy 62 and County Road 1 – specifically recommending a roundabout be constructed.

The advisory committee stated it has received background information from Peter Moyer, Director of Development Services, on conversations with the MTO and from John Hatch PEC OPP Staff Sergent on collisions at the intersection.

The committee also included recommendations for ‘traffic calming’ measures to be reviewed once a new manual is complete – for Catherine, Ackerman and Jane streets.

Councillor Jamie Forrester reminded council he hopes Cherry Valley is remaining at the front of the line for traffic calming measures/speed bumps he has been seeking for the past five years.

It also seeks consultation with staff and the high school about parking, or the moving of signs, to create a safer area for students and families as well as a look at parking on Paul, Elm and Barker streets.

Great idea — the more roundabouts, the better. The one in Picton is well-designed, and there is no reason the same design (curved entry) can’t be implemented at 62/1. Learn to drive, people.

There isn’t one intersection where a county road and 62 meet that is properly constructed, signed nor illuminated enough for night driving. Try coming home from Belleville at night and finding your road and then try making a left hand turn onto it – Good Luck! Many of these roads are marked with those black a fluorescent “High Collision” signs – which can be seen during the day, but do nothing to help solve the problem at night. The municipality and the ministry need to make these intersections a top priority – particularly since both levels of government encourage tourism, creating more traffic.

I emphatically disagree with The County’s Traffic Advisory Committee on the issue of a roundabout at CR1 and Hwy 62 (both are notorious drag strips). It’s become obvious that the province’s roads are characterized by anarchy due to the pitiful lack of enforcement by the OPP. The situation at CR1 and Hwy 62 is only one example and spending a fortune to build a roundabout at this location probably won’t get us where we need to go. The situation has deteriorated to the point where I regularly pull off the road to allow aggressive drivers to pass me. The answer to the mess that is the province’s roads is enforcement. To put it another way, some drivers need to to lose their licences. This would obviously have an affect on the economy but the fortune currently being spent for emergency service providers/health care/insurance should decline as a result.
