Library branches in north end of County reach out to community

The Consecon and Ameliasburgh branches of the County of Prince Edward Public Library are “small but mighty” hubs of activity in the north end where neighbours meet, access library services, and connect with each other and the wider community.

As part of the larger library system, they have access to all the same resources, and are able to be cozy in welcoming spaces.
The two branches share one Friends of the Library group which works to support and champion the two local branches.

This spring, group member Bev Marr arranged several history displays in each branch and offered a well-attended craft program sharing how to make wreaths using used books and sheet music. She and her daughter also led a successful workshop making candle holders from wine barrel staves.

The group has arranged an upcoming two-day workshop that will teach participants how to play Mah-Johngg. Audrey Marsland, an avid Mah-Jongg player, will teach the Chinese tile game that, according to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, became a fad in England, the United States, and Australia in the 1920s and continues to be popular to this day.

The workshop is set for Tuesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Ameliasburgh Branch. All are welcome and no prior experience is required. The library has a set of tiles that will be used. Space is very limited, so anyone interested in participating should call the branch at (613) 968-9327 to register.

The Ameliasburgh branch is also a member of the Ameliasburgh Heritage Hub, a group that works together to celebrate the history of the area. This includes the Ameliasburgh Heritage Village, the Marilyn Adams Genealogical Research Centre and Seventh Town Historical Society, and the Quinte Educational Museum and Victoria Schoolhouse.

As part of the library’s involvement in that group, the Ameliasburgh branch has cans of Sprague soup and vegetables available for sale. These are printed with replicas of heritage labels and are a fundraiser for the Heritage Hub.

The group arranges regular events including the popular Amelia’s Birthday in the summer.

Partnering with community groups and being involved in what’s happening in our community is key to our success at each of our branches, and we’re so grateful to work with our neighbours.

The Ameliasburgh Branch is now open until 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the Consecon Branch open until 6 p.m. on Wednesdays to provide additional access for people who work until 5 p.m.

Prince Edward County offers six library branches with programs and services for everyone. Visit peclibrary.org to find upcoming events, the latest new books, and more.
