Picton’s Regent Theatre will welcome Canadian royalty this spring when Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell attends the gala opening of a play.
The County Theatre Group announced Dowdeswell will attend the opening night gala performance of The Pirates of Penzance, Thursday, April 30. The 29th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is the third woman to serve the position, (Pauline Mills McGibbon and Hilary Weston).
The Pirates of Penzance, a popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera in two acts, is making its return to the Regent 15 years after the the theatre group first presented the play.
The group’s artistic director and co-founder, John Burns, said “Her Honour has agreed to attend the performance, address the assembled citizenry and subsequently meet with them at the post play reception.”
He hopes the re-mounting of the play will equal its original success where they sold every ticket for five performances.
“This is the feat that has not been equaled since by any performance,” said Burns.
