A 46-year-old Ameliasburgh man has died following a fall through ice on Roblin Lake, Sunday. He was identified Monday as James Ervine, of Ameliasburgh Township.
Officers and emergency crews responded to a call Dec. 21, 2014 at approximately 4:05 p.m. at Roblin Lake, Ameliasburgh. Sgt. Kristine Rae reports the man had been skating with a family member. He died at the hospital. The family member was safely rescued from the water.
“The OPP remind everyone to use extreme caution around lakes and rivers,” said Rae. “Treat all ice as unsafe unless you have proven otherwise.”

sighs, this is really, really, so sad that a family is suffering because of this kind of death on Roblin Lake at this time. Ice > the deceiver.
The ice is NOT FROZEN thick enough. It is surface ice with the edges still water, when the sun shines. The lake is fickle > with warm spots due to lake-bottom springs giving soft fragile ice only mm thick in some areas, very changeable with the weather. It is tenuous, even with temps well below zero at the best of times. I’d trust 6″ of ice and then some areas would still be less than 4″.
Condolences to the family and friends
Please pass the word, ICE IS NOT FROZEN.
