Metered parking from Talbot to Cenotaph

Metered parking gets the go-ahead and a proposal for six left-hand turning lanes on Picton’s Main Street was defeated, Thursday when County Council received a report from the Commissioner of Public Works.
Downtown Business Improvement Area executive director Roni Summers Wickens says the rationale for introducing left hand turning lanes was to reduce traffic congestion along the top of Main Street and to capitalize on the paving/painting presently taking place as the restoration of Main Street nears completion.
“When all was said and done, council elected to introduce metered parking on the west end of Main Street between Talbot and the Cenotaph,” Summers Wickens said. “The aim of this initiative is to reduce the use of this lane as a right hand passing lane, which as we can all atest, can be problematic (and dangerous) for pedestrians and motorists alike.
“At issue is the tension that exists between Picton’s Traffic Studies, Parking Studies and Design Studies.  In the end, however, it is believed that council made a commitment to supporting merchants through the provision of metered parking along their store fronts.  That said, this matter will be reviewed over the course of the summer-fall and will return to council for additional discussion/debate in 2011.
“We of course will continue to monitor and we invite businesses in the affected areas to comment on whether these changes are seen to positively, negatively, or neutrally impact the operation of business on Picton’s Main Street.”
