Milford Branch Library more warm and welcoming thanks to ‘Friends’

The Milford Branch of the County of Prince Edward Public Library is even more warm and welcoming at its location on the main street in Milford.

Thanks to an enthusiastic group of Friends of the Library, as well as some generous donations made specifically in support of the branch, it’s looking better than ever with new carpeting, heating, and even a new big-screen television for presentations, displays and more.

The Friends of the Milford Branch Library have been taking advantage of the refreshed space as well as a recent Ontario Seniors Programs grant to offer a winter series they’re calling “Selfcare is Healthcare.”

Previous speakers, including Kathy McAlpine and Saskia Grund, have already shared their expertise at well-attended talks, and the series will continue through the winter months.

The next talk will feature Angi Jones of Angi’s Wellness Centre on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Angi is a nurse who specializes in foot care, a reflexology therapist and a holistic practitioner who believes that health starts within. She will offer an interactive workshop introducing reflexology as a natural, holistic therapy. As she describes, “You will learn how specific pressure points on the feet, hands and ears correspond to different organs and systems of the body, as well as how stimulating these points help promote relaxation, balance, improved circulation and self care.” No experience or prior knowledge is required – everything in this series is designed to introduce you to new ideas and opportunities in the community. Register at peclibrary.org or call the branch at (613) 476-4130.

The knitting group at the Milford Branch Library continues to meet each week on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Participants bring their handcrafts – often knitting and crochet, but sometimes felting, weaving, and other projects – and share in not only the joy of working on their projects together but lively conversation and connection.

If you are interested in learning more about the Friends of the Milford Branch and might have some time to contribute, drop by when they meet on the third Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Milford Branch.

Dorothy Speirs chairs the group and would love to hear from anyone interested in participating and helping to keep the library a vital part of the community.

In addition to organizing programs with the branch staff, Friends also volunteer to arrange book sales and other fundraising projects, advocate for the library and are valuable all-around support, and we’re so appreciative for all that they do.

If you missed Saskia Grund when she was at the Milford Branch, there are two more opportunities – she will give a presentation all about Simple Snacks for Seniors on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Picton Branch and Thursday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at the Wellington Branch. You’ll have the opportunity to learn how to create simple, nourishing snacks using ingredients you probably already have to support your energy, digestion, and overall health.

Also, our congratulations to the Friends of the Wellington Branch Library for their recent “Passions” series celebrating local residents sharing their passions. This speaker series has been an annual fixture in Wellington for many years, and we are thrilled with the response once again, and appreciative of the speakers for giving generously of their time and enthusiasm.

More programs are scheduled all the time – visit peclibrary.org for the latest updates.
