Citizens of South Marysburgh, the County and beyond celebrated the 70th anniversary of The Milford Fair Saturday, under mostly sunny skies.

The fair, known as an old-fashioned event that honours its rural roots, was established in 1946 to welcome soldiers returning home from the Second World War and remains a highlight in Prince Edward County’s fall calendar.

“From 1946 to today, this fair has occurred every year. A 70th anniversary is a special occasion” said fair president Steve Ferguson who commemorated the milestone with the presentation of a framed letter from Premier Kathleen Wynne, to Wilber Miller, on behalf of all who were in attendance at the first fair in 1946.

Wynne commended everyone involved with the Milford Fall Fair – both past and present.

“Through a celebration that includes agricultural prizes, crafts, art, music, food and more, you remind us of the origins of the food at our table, the farmers who work tirelessly to bring it there, and of the richness of our province’s vibrant rural communities,” the certificate read, in part.

Mayor Robert Quaiff also presented long-time fair volunteer Bruce Dowdell with a certificate on behalf of council extending appreciation and best wishes on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

As is tradition, the Murray Clapp Memorial Citizenship Awards were presented to honour community involvement and volunteer work by citizens, and volunteers with the PEC fire department. The 2016 awards were presented by Glendon Walker, Joyce Minaker and Leona Head to Richard Dance, Johanna McCarthy, Peter Blendell, Sandra Emlaw, Karen Cowan and Sacha Warunkiw.

“It is the volunteers who put the unity in our community,” said Neil Ellis, Bay of Quinte MP. “Events like this wouldn’t happen without them because volunteers bring our communities together.”

MPP Todd Smith noted that following the gruelling heat and lack of rain this summer, he was divided on wishing it would hold off as everyone gathered to celebrate. “Rain is on the way and it’s good news for a lot of people, but until it gets here, I hope everybody enjoys this harvest time – the greatest time of the year to enjoy the fruits of your labour.”

The rain did hold off for most of the day. Two years ago rain fell on Milford’s Fair for the first time in 40 years. That year, the fair’s theme was appropriately honouring farmers who are always at the mercy of the weather.
