New parking stations in Picton free for December – with donations to Feed the Meter campaign

The County has completed installation of 22 ‘pay and display’ parking stations in downtown Picton – but while the machines are activated, parking fees for December will go to the annual Feed the Meter Campaign.

All money collected will go to the Prince Edward and Hastings Learning Foundation to provide nutritional meals and snacks to local school children in need.

Sixteen stations are located along Picton Main Street, while six are situated along Elizabeth, King, Walton and Ross streets. Parking in Trenton and Belleville’s downtowns also support the campaign.

The goal of student nutrition programs is to ensure all students have daily access to breakfast, lunch or snacks while at school.

“We know that students in our area arrive at school hungry for a variety of reasons – poverty, rushed mornings, long bus rides, etc.,” said Kellie Brace, Food for Learning co-ordinator. “Regardless of the reason, we aim to minimize hunger faced by children and youth in our community. The support received through the Feed the Meter campaign makes this possible.”

In the 2016-2017 school year, Food for Learning programs provided over a million meals and snacks to 12,823 individual students.

All proceeds of the Feed the Meter campaign are returned to the schools in the communities where the funds were raised. The goal this year is $30,000. Sponsoring the campaign in the County are Prinzen Ford, the Prince Edward Federation of Agriculture, the Picton BIA, Rotary and Kellogg’s.
