Michael Hymus, new owner of the property that last housed Midtown Meats, had the 12 by 24-metre surface built in memory, and tribute, to his father David, who died suddenly last September.

Though privately owned, Hymus welcomes the community to use it – weather permitting, seven days a week. He also has sticks, pucks and 40 pairs of skates available to borrow.

“My mother Marilyn, sister Julie, brother Peter and I would like to thank the people of Prince Edward County for the love and support that you all gave us during our time of hardship last fall when dad passed unexpectedly,” he said, on his Wellington Ice Rink Facebook page. “The spirit of the rink, as my father would want, is to primarily be for everyone! It is a place for learners, intermediates and pros to get together and enjoy the spirit of hockey and a sense of community.”

Those who have “liked” the page have been quick to share their thanks for his efforts.

“On behalf of the many Wellington residents who will get hours and hours of fresh air, exercise and enjoyment, thank you Mike!,” said Sandra Smith Farquhar.

“Our family is really looking forward to skating on this rink soon,” said Cara Grondin. “What an amazing contribution to the community!”

Hymus said one of his greatest memories is of playing pick-up hockey with his dad.

“We miss him every day, but know he is here in our hearts. Love your loved ones, pull them close and never let them go.”

His next ventures include looking into offering support to the Picton Splash Pad and opening the Angry Bird chicken restaurant across from the Picton fairgrounds.

Mel, I disagree. My granddaughter was with me last weekend and wished to go skating. The Picton arena was not open for public skating on Saturday so we made the trip in from south of Milford to Wellington. She and I enjoyed a good old fashion outdoor skate.
    Thanks you Mike.

What an amazing gift that Michael has given to his community. Especially to the children who cannot afford skates.
Michael, I think that your Dad would be very pleased and proud that pick up hockey in an outdoor rink is once again alive and well in the County.

  3. Mel says:

I very nice jester. I have read what this young man proposed for the slash pad.
Great idea but forget the outdoor rink part. We have two arenas now that are under used and we cannot afford to operate. Another rink would just add extra cost to maintain a facility that will be under used.

  4. Marc says:

An incredible gift to the community.
