October was an unprecedented fundraising month for the renovation and expansion of the Picton Library.
An astounding $70,263 in matching donations were made for a record-breaking total of $120,263 raised in one month. An anonymous donor’s pledge of up to $50,000 kickstarted a matching donation challenge and the Prince Edward County community responded – from Ameliasburg to Waupoos and everywhere in between, including families, individuals, groups, businesses and, in Consecon, Dory the dog – were inspired to donate.
“It’s the equivalent of raising almost $4,000 every day for a month,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson. “Fundraising $120,000 in 31 days demonstrates just how much people love their library. Congratulations to staff, board members and volunteers.”
Ferguson and Picton councillor Kate MacNaughton joined Alexandra Bake, Chair of the Library Expansion Committee, Devon Jones, Chair, of the Library Board, Barbara Sweet, CEO, and volunteers to mark this occasion at the historic Carnegie-built library.
Inspired by the success of October’s Love Your Library campaign, the group held up new Love Your Library lawn signs now available for a $5 donation at any Prince Edward County public library.
“These signs are the start of even bigger things,” said Bake. “We’ve got several events planned for 2020 and welcome anyone who would like to volunteer and support us. This weekend, volunteers will be at the Annual Drake Devonshire Holiday Pop-Up Market on Saturday, Nov 30 and the Santa Claus Parade in Picton on Sunday, Dec 1.”
“Our continued success is thanks to everyone who loves their library,” said Sweet. “Donors are funding the restoration of the original fireplace and reading room and a living green wall. A technology resource centre, music recording studio, accessible modern elevator and three meeting rooms are also available for sponsorship.”
December 31st is right around the corner and any donation of $20 or more is eligible to receive a tax receipt. Donations can be made via peclibrary.org, in person or at any PEC library, or by contacting CEO Barbara Sweet at 613-476-5962.
