One person dead following fall through ice; second incident involving people and pets on ice surfaces

One person has died following a fall through the ice off County Road 20 in Hillier.

On Friday, Jan. 14, shortly before 4 p.m. OPP Prince Edward County Detachment responded to a report of an individual who was missing, that may have been seen on the ice. With the assistance of the East Region Emergency Response Team, East Region Canine Unit and Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue, officers responded to County Road 20 in Hillier Ward.

Information was obtained that an individual was on the ice walking their dog. A subsequent search lead to a person being located deceased in the water. No further information is being released by OPP.

Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue responded to an incident at 5:45 pm on Friday, January 14 on County Road 20 in Wellington for a missing person on the ice. The person was located by PEC Fire and Rescue and brought to shore around 7 pm. PEC Fire and Rescue will not be releasing any information for the incident and please send all inquiries to the OPP.

Prince Edward County Fire Chief Chad Brown notes this is the second incident in the past couple of weeks where pet owners have gone on the ice and fallen through while trying to rescue their pets.

He asks residents to keep pets away from the edges of all bodies of water when enjoying the outdoors.
“Many pet owners attempt rescue when pets fall through the ice,” said Brown. “Unfortunately, the pet owners tend to fall through the ice and place themselves at extreme risk while attempting rescue. Let our trained professionals respond and assist with the rescue, so pet owners do not place themselves at risk.”

Both warn that while the ice may look safe, it is not to be trusted as temperatures have been erratic this winter and much of the ice is not thick enough.
