OPP/MTO find safety concerns during vehicle inspections

Prince Edward OPP teamed up with investigators from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and Prince Edward County bylaw to conduct joint vehicle inspections on commercial use passenger vehicles and other commercial motor vehicles.

Seven vehicles were scheduled for inspection and three more were stopped and directed to the inspection location.

“As a result, officers observed a number of serious safety concerns including braking systems not operating, suspension issues, a flat tire on a CMV among other things,” reports Aaron Miller, PEC OPP Community Safety/Media Relations Officer. “Charges were laid for using and permitting the use of unsafe vehicles.”

The OPP and MTO are going to be continuing these inspections throughout the year.

Last month, the OPP and MTO inspected eight scheduled vehicles, and three more directed for inspection. Safety concerns included rusted frames, non-functioning seatbelts, missing or modified mufflers and braking systems that were not operating.

One person was charged with driving while under suspension; others with operating unsafe vehicles.

Miller noted four drivers who did not show up for inspection run the risk of being charged and having their licence plates removed by the MTO.
