Overtime win vaults Pirates into second place

With just 17.8 seconds remaining in overtime and the club afforded a rare extra session power play in a 3-3 tie against Campbellford Thursday night, the Picton Pirates (9-8-1) knew they would have to make quick work if they were to avoid a shootout.
A timeout was called by the Bucs, a play decided upon, and the rest was left up to the skill of the players on the ice.
Sure enough, it was a skill goal that secured the Pirates ninth win of the season.
Off a draw to the left of Rebels netminder Andrew Winsor, centre Mitch Rosborough won the puck cleanly back to Evan Greer.
The Pirates leading point man drew the attention of a Rebels forward and then made a masterful pass to veteran defenceman Steve Csanyi at the top of the right circle.

With just three Rebel skaters on the ice and all of them occupied, Csanyi calmly took his time, skated in on Winsor and picked the five hole with just 8 seconds left.

With the win, the Pirates leapfrogged the idle Napanee Raiders and the Amherstview Jets and Picton’s 19 points are only second to the league leading Port Hope Panthers and their 22 points.
“They were a huge two points hanging there and although we really wanted it in regulation, we will take them any way we can get them at this stage of the season,” Pirates GM Jason Parks said.
Parks added he really liked the game’s final play
“That Csanyi goal was a thing of beauty. Assistant coach Ryan Woodward drew up the play and it worked to perfection. Mitch winning the draw cleanly, Evan making a beautiful pass and Steve snapping it home from about 15 feet out, it all looked like clockwork,” he said.
It was the Pirates fourth straight win and their second straight home overtime victory.
It was also the second straight home game in which Picton had to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
Down 3-1 partway through the second, it was Csanyi who sparked the comeback with his powerplay point blast at 9:45.
Tyler Kearns and Josh Fagan assisted on the Csanyi’s first of the season.
Csanyi also setup the game tying goal about three minutes later.
Taking a Ryan Vader pass and drawing a forechecker towards him, Csanyi made a nice move to get past the oncoming Rebel and feed Rosborough in front at 13:51 to make it 3-3.
Picton’s other marker came in the first when Jesse Lloyd whacked home a Pat Millington rebound at 11:18 of the first.
Matt Kaludis picked up his third straight win and league leading seventh victory stopping 29 of 32 Rebel shots.
Picton looks to make it five wins in a row on Saturday when they travel to Port Hope.
The Pirates next home action is Thursday, Nov. 25 when they battle the Amherstview Jets.
