People rescued after ice floe broke from shore

Three people were on an ice floe when it broke away from shore and started drifting down the channel off Cressy Bayside Road.
Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue (PECFR) responded to the call about 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.
One person managed to jump to shore before the ice drifted into the open channel about one km from shore. Firefighters responded with the rescue boat and returned the other two stranded people to shore.
PECFR reminds people to stay off the ice as conditions are changing rapidly – especially with rain and warmer temperatures.
Also, the ice breaker has been through Adolphus Reach and Picton Bay this week creating further unsafe ice conditions throughout the area.

There may well need to be new regulations in place that will see the cost of such rescues charged back to the irresponsible people who chose to put other persons lives at risk to rescue them. This had to happen in the west when persons would decide to ski in posted no skiing areas and then were trapped.
