The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board encouraged students to “Say One Nice Thing” in this year’s campaign for Bullying Awareness and Prevention last week.
Prince Edward Collegiate Institute welcomed Travis Price, founder of Pink Shirt Day, to the school.
Price, now in his 20s, spoke about his high school days in Nova Scotia where a fellow Grade 9 student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. That afternoon, Price, who had also suffered bullying, and a friend brought 75 pink tank tops for all his friends to wear in a show of support. The movement has made its way across the nation ever since and is celebrated in February.
The pink shirt has become the international symbol for anti bullying campaigns. Price is now a guest and motivational speaker for anti-bullying events around the world.
Thursday, the school’s drama department, under the direction of Matthew Sheahan, presented its annual bullying awareness “collective creation” of skits under the theme “Words, Words, Words”.
The drama students performed for Grades 7 and 8 students in the morning and Grades 9 and 10 in the afternoon.
