Pioneer of County’s wine industry honoured at Taste

WaupoosWineEdLabelThe pioneer of Prince Edward County’s wine industry was quietly honoured at the 12th annual Taste Community Grown festival at the Crystal Palace in Picton Saturday.

Almost one year after his passing, Waupoos Estate Winery launched a new wine honouring its founder Ed Neuser, who, with Rita Kaimins, purchased the 100-acre farm and century home at Waupoos in 1983. They started with half an acre of grapevines in 1993 and added more vines every year. On June 15, 2001, the County’s first winery was open for business. Today the vineyard comprises about 20 acres.

“The Pioneer – Ed Neuser” is a white wine featuring a blend of Vidal and Geisenheim from the oldest vines planted,” explained Amy Dickinson, of Waupoos Estate Winery. “The two varieties were his favourites.”

The County’s wine industry pioneer died in October 2012, following a battle with cancer.

Tastes of the County were enjoyed by more than 2,000 people attending the 12th annual event.

Dozens of vendors, five culinary seminars, a pie auction, beer and cider masters, a local version of the television show ‘Chopped’, children’s fun and a farm and artisan market were part of an expanded weekend celebration.

Taste Community Grown opened Friday night with a Movie in the Mess event celebrating regional history, film, music and art.

Following Saturday’s signature event, a Back 40 Bash was held at the Crystal Palace headlined by Juno award nominees High Valley; and with Autumn Hill and Lindsay Broughton.

Sunday, hundreds of cyclists on 25, 50 or 100 km rides rode through the pastoral back roads in the annual Cribbage Ride.

It was a first visit to Taste for Milica Tempest and David Majury, though both are veterans of camping and visits to the Sandbanks since they were kids.
“We have been visiting the County in the summer for years – usually the Sandbanks and the wineries but we’ve never been to this food event,” said Tempest, who was enjoying her birthday at the Taste event.

“Our visits have really been about the the food and the wine,” Majury laughed. “We always have a great time here.”
