Pirates go for four tonight

A dominating goaltending performance and a pair of points by a recent roster addition helped the Picton Pirates secure a tight 2-1 win over the Napanee Raiders Tuesday night at the Strathcona Paper Centre.
Matt Kaludis made 43 stops and Mitch Rosborough had a goal and an assist in the win, Picton’s eighth of the 2010-11 campaign.
Rosborough opened the scoring, beating Raiders goaltender Laine Parent five hole just 5:33 into the opening frame.
A nice feed by Tyler Kearns and a good work by Dylan Leduc helped set up the Rosborough goal, his second of the season since returning to Picton after two and half seasons with the parent Wellington Dukes organization.
After the Picton goal, it was a goaltending performance that Picton hung its proverbial hat on as Kaludis stopped all 31 Napanee attempts.
In the third, it was Rosborough’s chance to return the favour as his smart feed setup Kearns in front of the net and the London native made no mistake, picking the top corner on Parent.
Former Raider Pat Millington added an assist on the play.
Napanee finally got to Kaludis about two minutes later when Jeremy Burley picked up a rebound and fired home the Raiders first of the evening.
But Picton, in a bend-but-don’t-break kind of defence was able to limit the Raiders chances and eventually snuffed out the Napanee attack.
The game had an ugly moment when Burley, with just a few seconds on the clock, took a one handed swing at second year defenceman Brandon Peever, opening up a gash on the back of Bloomfield natives head.
Burley earned a slashing major and game misconduct on the play.
After the game, Picton GM Jason Parks was enthused by his club’s gritty effort.
“To come in here and win at any time is special, but this performance by Matt Kaludis and the defensive corps was simply awesome. Every defenceman worked hard, kept Napanee to the outside of the ice and Kaludis was there when he had to be,” Parks said.
After a lull where they lost four of five games, The Pirates have stormed back to win their last three games.
Picton continued to roll in Campbellford, winning 6-4 Saturday night.
Evan Greer had a pair for Picton while Jeff Kingdon, Ryan Vader, Leduc and Mitch Burkitt also tickled the twine.
Kaludis was solid when he had to be in the Picton  net, earning the win.
On Thursday, Picton started its current winning streak with a gut check 4-3 overtime win over the league leading Port Hope Panthers.
Down 3-1 going into the third period, Ryan Sizer and Vader scored on nice wrist shots to draw even with the Panthers part way through the final frame.
Jack Davison bagged his second of the game with 2:20 remaining to put Picton up 4-3, but a goal by Kyle Giroux with under a minute left forced the game into overtime.
Killing a short man advantge in overtime, Peever blocked a Port Hope point shot and managed a to get a partial breakaway on the Panther net.
Cutting across the blueline, Peever unleashed a low wrist shot that beat Port Hope netminder Jon Hull just 22 seconds in.
Picton goes for four in a row on tonight against the Campbellford Rebels.
Puck drop is 7:30 pm.
