Pirates in second heading into Thursday’s game

The Picton Pirates are in second place with a week to go in the Empire Junior C season, an enviable position in the five team loop as clubs are jockeying for playoff positioning.
However, with just a one point lead over the Amherstview Jets and a two point lead over the Campbellford Rebels, Picton’s hold on the second seed is tenuous at best.
“I think going into the season, if you would have told us we would be in second place at the start of the last week of the season, we would have been very happy,” Pirates GM Jason Parks said. “But, with the way the the league is so competitive right now, we can’t let up for a second or we could find ourselves in fourth place.”
Picton leapfrogged Amherstview Saturday night as they shot down the Jets 4-1.
The visitors got off to a hot start as Dylan Leduc and Evan Greer both scored in the first to put Picton ahead 2-0.
Amherstview had the only goal of the second as Travis Rizzi scored a powerplay goal in the middle framed.
Tasked with killing off the first six minor penalties over the opening 40 minutes, Picton was near perfect on the penalty kill, making the Jets go 1-for-9.
In the third, Picton rebuilt and then extended its lead as Dylan Mountenay scored twice to make the final 4-1.
Real Cormier stopped 28 of 29 Jets shots in picking up his first win as a Pirate.
Picton has a single game remaining on its schedule, a Thursday night home game against the Napanee Raiders.
