Prince Edward OPP officers acknowledge strong community support in a successful ending to a four-day search for missing Ameliasburgh resident, Matthew Simms, found Saturday night at 9:15pm.
“Prince Edward OPP officers were assisted by close to 100 community volunteers in their search for Simms on Saturday,” said constable Kim Guthrie. “Volunteers lined the roadway and fields in the search area near the spot Simms was last seen with the hopes of a sighting of him.
“It was believed Simms was in the bush but confused and frightened, therefore aggressive ground searching which may only push him deeper into hiding was re – addressed. In a proactive, non intrusive tactic, volunteers gave up their Saturday and stood patiently, watching for any clues that Simms may be in the area.
“At dusk, the volunteers were sent home, and then the helicopter took to the sky with a ‘FLIR’ heat sensing device on board. Soon a sighting of a still object in the middle of a corn field illuminated the screen and Simms was located shortly after. He was in good condition and brought to Belleville General Hospital for follow up treatment.
“Members of the Prince Edward OPP detachment were impressed with the strong community support demonstrated on Saturday. The effort of all the volunteers involved in the search for SIMMS is greatly appreciated.”
