Province promises interim payment toward 2013 ice storm damage

An Ontario government news release indicates Prince Edward County will receive a $155,682 interim payment from the Ice Storm Assistance fund.

However, Mayor Robert Quaiff said Friday he hasn’t heard anything about assistance yet to help cover costs from the December 2013 ice storm. The storm cost the County almost $500,000 in damages, emergency response costs and clean up. The County was one of the hardest hit municipalities in the province.

Three municipalities have received final payments and 55 claimants will be watching the mail for interim payments.

MPP Todd Smith called on the province in July to speed up the process for the ice storm assistance as well as assistance due to flooding in Foxboro in April 2014.

Friday’s press statement said “The remaining funding will be issued once the claims review is complete and eligible costs are verified.”

Final payments went to:
Township of Centre Wellington – $297,543
Township of Mapleton – $23,009
Township of Puslinch – $44,923

Ontario will be reimbursed by the federal government for a portion of the eligible response and recovery costs under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements.
The ice storm caused widespread damage and blackouts across southern, western and eastern Ontario. At the peak of the storm, over 800,000 hydro customers were without power.
