QHC gets ‘B’ grade from CBC; votes from the people say different

Reaction to the CBC’s ranking of Canadian hospitals is as mixed as the rankings now under way by the public.

The CBC’s the fifth estate ranked 239 facilities based on data reported by hospitals to the Canadian Institute for Health Information using the help of a panel of biostatisticians. The CBC reports the Ontario Hospital Association’s CEO and president Pat Campbell criticizd the scoring system. Campbell was fine with the CBC commentary and patients’ commentary but is concerned that patients will rely on the information to make decisions on when and how to access care.

QHC’s four hospitals came through the CBC’s Rate My Hospital with a grade of ‘B’. However, they are lumped in together in a “large community” with 182 beds.

Separately, the distinctions are in the ongoing public ratings. As of noon today, 48 people had voted on the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital and gave it a near perfect five-star rating. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/features/ratemyhospital/profiles/qhc-prince-edward-county-memorial-hospital-quinte-health-care/

The Belleville site with 180 votes, is sitting at a two-star rating. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/features/ratemyhospital/profiles/qhc-belleville-general-hospital-quinte-health-care/

The public rating period has just begun.

The fifth estate is to broadcast a special Rate My Hospital report on Friday at 9 p.m.
