Quaiff’s Quicksteppers in training for County Marathon

Training is well under way for Mayor Quaiff’s Quicksteppers – Gord Fox, Jim Dunlop, Bill Roberts, Steve Ferguson Robert Quaiff – for participation in this year’s County Marathon Sunday, Oct. 2.

“Fitness instructor Tracy Young Powers has always had a vision to make PEC a healthier municipality and thought what better place to start than with the mayor and council forming a team for the marathon,” said Quaiff. “She gave advice on proper footwear, walking posture, diet, etc to get us ready. We are all currently averaging 10km per day walking briskly.”

The 13th annual County Marathon runs Sunday, Oct. 2.

The event features individual, full or half marathon as well as the relay challenge for the chosen charity, the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The race is a Boston qualifier and is sanctioned by Athletics Canada. Described as “flat and fast” by national level coach Peter Pimm, racers can also expect a warm welcome from the County residents along the fully closed course down the roads connecting Wellington, Bloomfield and Picton. Pimm is also the County Marathon’s official route advisor.

Please note the final two kilometres of our certified race route have changed due to major downtown construction. The new race kit pick up is located at The Essroc Centre, 111 Belleville St., in Wellington. This is also the start line for the Full and Team Challenge race events. The new finish line is located on Gladstone Ave, located just north west of ‘regular’ finish line. The award ceremony will take place at the Community Centre in Picton, located behind the parking lot where all buses will continue to depart on race morning. Participant day parking and busing remain in the same location as last year.

“Our relay race is now referred to as the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation Team Challenge or ‘the Hospital Foundation Team Challenge’ – for short,” said Kailey Ellis-Chapman, race director. “Since its inception we have dedicated the County Marathon to raising awareness of the importance of our local hospital and feel that by renaming an event which draws as many as 800 runners each year, we may be able to do more to further our efforts and the hard work of over 500 volunteers on race day. Part of the event will be an award for the team which raises the most money for the Foundation – will that be your team?”

VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are needed to support the road closures on Race Day as well as to help out in other ways.
