More than 300 bed and wall quilts were on display at the Wellington area in the Prince Edward Quilter’s Guild’s biggest show ever on the weekend.
Show co-chair Janet Reader Day won the Best in Show award for her “Not a Double Wedding Ring” original design featuring a paper-pieced silk moon, some hand dyed. It was domestic machine quilted and quietly contains a lady leaning back on a rock, a frog, turtle, fox, owl, tree snake, tree lizard and native motifs.
“It’s called that because there are a bunch of young people in our family getting married and given the choice of a quilt, or cash, they all chose quilts. They all choose the Double Wedding Ring pattern, so this one was anything but that,” said Reader Day.
The two-day event also featured demonstrations and an overflow of entries said co-chair Maggie Goode.
“This is our 16th show and the best one ever with so many quilts entered by our 74 members that they’ve spilled over into the Highline Hall.”
Diane Hunter and Linda Dove demonstrate hand-quilting at the Macaulay Heritage Park booth featuring (in the background) a c1918 quilt Maple Leaf Forever, made by the Athol Ladies Group (possibly IODE). It was once owned by T.G. Bowerman and passed on through the family. It was never actually used, and thought to be initially purchased, gifted, or won by raffle.
Two visitors view Colleen Kelly’s ‘Work in the Garden’ a Bargello centre with a cosmic twist patter from the book Twist and Tum Bargello Quilts with an applique flower box border.
