Quinte Conservation issues flood warning

Quinte Conservation logoWater flows and levels at or above spring levels have the Quinte Conservation Authority issuing a flood warning.
“Local rivers are rising rapidly after recent precipitation and warm temperatures and some areas will experience flooding,” says Bryon Keene, Quinte Conservation Water Resources Engineer.
Quinte Conservation staff will be performing some dam operations in Prince Edward County and the Napanee region as needed to allow the flows to pass.
The Moira River at Deloro, the Skootamatta River and Black River will peak on or before Sunday.  The Moira River at Foxboro should reach peak flows Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.  Areas most affected will be Foxboro including Carlton Cove, low-lying areas along Ashley Street and River Road and low-lying areas near Stoco and Moira Lakes.
The Salmon and Napanee Rivers will likely peak over the weekend and stay high until next week.
Parents and guardians are urged to keep children off the ice and away from the water. Stream banks will be slippery and treacherous.  Water flows and currents will be strong.  Dams and other water control structures should be avoided at all times.  Residents should ensure all drains, catch basins and culverts are clear of debris, and that sump pumps are in working order.
Quinte Conservation personnel are monitoring water levels and changing watershed conditions closely.  Anyone concerned about water levels may call Quinte Conservation at (613) 968-3434.  This flood warning will be updated on Monday, or sooner if conditions worsen.
Quinte Conservation monitors water levels, weather forecasts and ice and snow conditions carefully as part of the agency’s flood forecasting and warning program. Quinte Conservation’s area of concern includes the drainage basins of the Moira, Salmon and Napanee Rivers and their tributaries, and all of Prince Edward County.
The authority says a Flood Warning is issued when there is impending flooding. A Flood Warning requires action that may include the activation of the municipal flood emergency plan, warning residents or businesses in specific affected areas, and in some cases evacuation.
