Council endorses Regent Theatre’s ‘stadium’ liquor licence application

By Ross Lees
Prince Edward County council endorsed the Regent Theatre gaining a “stadium licence” from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
The Regent’s Alan Whitely told council the stadium licence would expand the area in which alcoholic beverages could be consumed within the downtown Picton theatre.
Previous licences allowed for alcoholic beverages to be served and consumed at the wine bar or in the lobby. With the stadium designation, patrons may take their drinks back to their theatre seats.
“Because this is a new sort of policy, the AGCO requires council to pass a resolution supporting it,” Whitely said.
Councillor Bev Campbell asked about the risks associated with the proposed new designation. Whitely said there were some, but the AGCO monitors events closely. The Regent does not want drinking drivers or  drinks circulating when there are under age people in the theatre.
“I can tell you that the AGCO has considered all these things. If we were granted a stadium endorsement on the licence, it’s also mandatory that the containers the people use to take into the auditorium are recyclable paper or plastic,” he said, explaining neither the AGCO or the Regent wanted to add danger to a situation with glassware.
“We must give the AGCO notice of each event we wish to use this particular licence, so if, for example, we were showing Toy Story on a Saturday afternoon, we wouldn’t get consent from the AGCO,” he said.
Whitely said the new licence designation would just about double their financial intake at events, thus creating less reliability on council for funding each year, prompting councillor Dianne O’Brien to respond, “This is a very enterprising approach.”
Councillor Brian Marisett wondered if there would be any additional liability to the municipality, but commissioner of recreation, parks and culture Barry Braun thought liability would be no different than a special occasion permit.
