The Rotary flame, promoting the eradication of Polio throughout the world, makes a stop at the local club’s Lilac Ride in Picton Sunday, May 24.
The annual Lilac Ride supports local charities and the Rotary PolioPlus fund.
The flame is making special stop in Picton on its way from India and Europe to the Rotary International Conference in San Paulo, Brazil in June. To celebrate the end of polio in India, the Rotary Club of Madras launched the Rotary Flame last December.
Last year fewer than 400 polio cases were reported worldwide (Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan), down from about 350,000 annually when Rotary began its international campaign in 1988.
The flame is to lead off the biking event Sunday morning. Cyclists will embark on one of three marked courses (25km, 50km, 100km) through some of Prince Edward County’s most beautiful cycling routes including Big Island and Green Point.
All routes start and finish in Picton at the curling club. Along with a scenic tour of parts of the County, participants are invited to a post ride barbecue at the curling club.
Registration and check-in begin at 7:30 am with start times at 9 am and 10 am.
