School EQAO results show steady progress

Students of Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board showed improvement on Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) provincial assessments written in the spring.

“As a school system we have provided students with optimal learning environments, effective tools and strategies for learning. These results represent the work of caring and dedicated principals, classroom teachers and support staff who have supported students to achieve gradual, incremental growth,” remarked Kathy Soule, Director of Education.

The following highlights the performance of students in Primary (Grade 3) and Junior (Grade 6) Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and Grade 9 Applied and Academic Mathematics.

Primary (Grade 3) Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Reading Students demonstrated a 5% growth rate, moving from 46% to 51%. This increase surpassed the provincial growth rate of 1%.

“Board members are proud of the students who participated in the EQAO tests. These results show that students are applying higher-order thinking skills across all curriculum areas and within a variety of learning situations,” commented Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board.

Board officials have tools in place to conduct deep analysis of student assessments and are developing a Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and School Improvement Plans for Student Achievement in the areas of:
