Short-term rentals can open Friday

Short-term rentals will be allowed to resume operations on Friday.

Lodges, cabins, cottages, homes, condos and bed and breakfast operations are included.

Ontario Econonomic Development Minister Vic Fedeli announced the news in a Tweet Thursday afternoon.

Short-term rentals, defined as 28 days or less, under the province’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act were only allowed to be offered or rented to those in need of emergency housing. Hotels, motels and student residences were still allowed to continue operating.
The order was issued April 4.

Top health officials in the province, and the Prince Edward Family Health Team asked visitors not to flock to their cottages during the pandemic as it could put a strain on small town resources.

Local health units are empowered to issue their own orders under the public health act.

Mayor Steve Ferguson makes it clear the opening of STAs was a provincial government decision he also learned about via the circulating Twitter message.

He raised concerns with MPP Todd Smith, noting particular needs of Prince Edward County and stated he is hopeful visitors will be patient and considerate, and follow

“Now is not the time to take sides and argue; now is the time for us to come together as a community, to work together to overcome the circumstances presented by the pandemic, and to be respectful, tolerant, considerate and compassionate. In so doing, we will get through this together.”

The municipality has not confirmed whether the new licensing process has re-opened for STAs who have not entered the approvals process.
