Shred it day offers secure destruction of unwanted personal records

County residents brought unwanted personal records by the boxful to the Hospice Prince Edward’s first Shred-A-Thon, Saturday and helped raise $2,033 for its local programs.
Secure destruction of the documents was completed by Iron Mountain’s Shred-it truck, in co-operation with Picton Home Hardware and Prince Edward OPP Constable Kim Guthrie, who also spoke with many residents about identify theft.
The public was invited to bring documents containing important private information (such as financial or tax documents) to be securely shredded on-site. The shredded paper will be 100% recycled by Iron Mountain at its depot in Kingston.
“Secure destruction of unwanted personal records is now a necessity; this is why I support this valued service offered by Hospice,” said Prince Edward OPP constable Kim Guthrie. “This event is a safe way to dispose of those documents that we hoard away year after year waiting for a opportunity such as this. Identity theft is a concern that we should all be aware of and it is our personal responsibility to ensure that we take every measure to protect ourselves.”
Like the electronic waste depot days, the drive-through event accepted donations. Iron Mountain shredded sensitive paperwork (old tax information and documentation, investment records cancelled cheques, cheque books, credit card applications and statements, past insurance statements, old utility bills) in state-of-the-art equipment while contributors watched.
All proceeds went to the Hospice prince Edward Volunteer Home visiting program bereavement and support. The services of Hospice Prince Edward are offered to this community free of charge.
