The Highway 49 bridge will be closed Sunday night as the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte are planning a ceremony to commemorate the deaths of two Tyendinaga men who drowned in 2016.
They are closing the bridge and are setting off fireworks from 8:30 to 10 pm Sunday, May 22.
Emergency vehicles will be permitted access during the closures by the Mohawk police on the north side and OPP on the south.
The bodies of Matt Fairman, 26 and Tyler Maracle, 21, were located in May 2016 by boaters who were passing near Lighthouse Island, just west of the bridge, in the Bay of Quinte. The two had been last seen when they went on a fishing outing almost two weeks earlier.
The Tyendinaga Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Fire Department will be a the base of the bridge on both sides for traffic control.
