Prince Edward County’s winter arts scene came to life this week as the South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) welcomed a vibrant crowd to the opening of its first‑ever Square Foot Art Show & Sale at Arts on Main in Picton.

Running until Feb. 18, the exhibition features an inspiring collection of 12” x 12” works by local artists whose creativity is sparked by SSJI’s advocacy, education, and outreach efforts to protect the rare and fragile PEC South Shore Key Biodiversity Area.
A highlight of the exhibition is the Watercolour in the Woods project, part of SSJI’s education program.
Guided by local artist Tim Snyder, Grade 6 and 7 students from Sophiasburgh Central School created watercolour landscapes paired with thoughtful written reflections on the ecological importance of the South Shore. Their work has been gathered into a square‑foot album now on display in the gallery. Snyder plans to make a special Family Day appearance to celebrate the students’ contributions.
The gallery, at 223 Main St, Picton is open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–4 a.m. and on Family Day, Monday, Feb 16). Artworks are available for purchase in person, or by calling 613‑476‑2066 during gallery hours. Visitors are encouraged to explore the Online Preview Gallery at SSJI.ca
“SSJI extends its heartfelt thanks to Arts on Main Gallery, our talented participating artists, our wine sponsor Lighthall Vineyards, and every guest who joined us for this milestone event,” said Cheryl Anderson, SSJI. “Your support strengthens our mission to protect and preserve the PEC South Shore, and we are deeply grateful.”
