“Spirits of our Past” come to life during Flashback February

Flashback February also marks the launch of a new, year-round Escape Room at Macaulay Heritage Park.

The unique cultural history of Prince Edward County will be on full display during Flashback February, a week of talks, film screenings, performances and experiences that runs Feb. 16-23.

“The schedule of events has something for everyone – from culinary workshops to children’s programming – and there’s a County connection with each activity,” said Jennifer Lyons, Head Curator, the County Museums.

Paranormal Show with Mark-Girdauskas

The week kicks off with The Paranormal Show on Feb. 16 at the Regent Theatre, a nod to the Fox Sisters, who were raised in Consecon and later rose to fame in the United States for their ability to communicate with the dead.

The Paranormal Show, featuring parapsychologist Scott McClelland, promises the same hair-raising sense of wonder that the Fox sisters’ Victorian audiences would have experienced, as the weird and exotic world of the supernatural is explored.

Flashback February also marks the launch of a new, year-round Escape Room at Macaulay Heritage Park. Participants have to solve clues and puzzles in under an hour to help find hidden treasures that will cover wages owed to servants. The experience is based on a true story.

Liz Driver, one of Canada’s foremost food historians and a South Marysburgh resident, will host an Antique Cookbooks Roadshow, offering an opportunity for residents to bring in historic cookbooks and brochures for a chance to hear more about their origins and what makes them unique to their time.

“It’s really impressive to see how the community has responded to the theme of ‘Spirits of Our Past,’” said Ken Dewar, Chair of the Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee (PEHAC). “We’re fortunate to live in a place with such rich history and Heritage Week is a great opportunity to celebrate it.”

Black River B&B will offer High Tea for a single group of 6-8 people daily.

During Flashback February there will be daily half-day historic wine tours offered by Sandbanks Vacations & Tours, featuring properties with long and colourful histories in The County. Black River B&B will offer High Tea for a single group of 6-8 people daily.

The schedule also includes:
· “Flashbacks,” four improv performances from Taste That!, riffing on spirits from our recent past;
· a behind-the-scenes talk from John Burzynski on Raising the Avro Arrow;
· a concert at the Picton United Church designed to show off the huge and historic pipe organ;
· a Route Champlain performance suitable for children that details the French explorer’s expeditions in the area;
· an open house at the Seventh Town Historical Society featuring WWI Victory Bond propaganda and other military artifacts;
· a talk on Loyalist spies;
· an evening of film and fascinating details on the finding of the mysteriously vanished Franklin

Expedition;
· a maritime-themed film festival; and,
· a night with an expert on séances and spiritualism, featuring local spirits and cocktails.

The event closes Feb. 23 with an Indigenous Musical Revue, featuring three styles of music performed by musicians from the Mohawk Territory. The event will also mark the opening of a permanent exhibition in Macaulay Church on Indigenous history of the area.

Heritage Award winners will also be announced at a special dinner on Feb. 23.
