Teen artists are showing off their talents at the Picton library’s Teen Room gallery until August 21.
The Liam Garrett Memorial Teen Art Show opened Saturday with a reception. The event is named in memory of Garrett, in recognition of his many contributions. County residents between the ages of 13-19 were eligible to enter and their work remains on display in the Teen Room and Meeting room for the duration of the show.
“We have been running an art show since 2003,” said Liz Zylstra, Youth Services, Prince Edward County Libraries. “The public has always been very supportive.”
The art will be judged by local artist Niall Eccles and a Peoples’ Choice will be named at the end of the show. Eccles was born in Picton, went to PECI, the University of Toronto and Sheridan College. He has done character
animation for television and is well-known for his work with the Picton BIA, Buddha Dog and Kelly’s locally as well as several Toronto businesses. Technology has changed the world of art, he said, noting he can live here in the County and still compete outside of the area.
“I’ve always admired Liz Zylstra’s efforts,” said Eccles. “She helps to keep art alive for the teens.”
Eccles has never judged an art show before, but says he will be looking to see something of the artist’s personality in their art, original thought, creativity and good execution.
“Many people tend to dismiss young artists because of their age,” he said. “I think that they should come and see the art – they may be surprised.”
“I won first place last year and an honourable mention in the past,” said Svenya Scherer, 19. “I like art because it’s fun. I like to paint things that interest me. I do a lot of mythology. I like to paint elves and dragons. I either do pencil sketches or work in acrylics. Oil takes too long to dry and watercolours bleed to much.”
