County artist Susan Straiton, centre, was winner of the coveted Peoples’ Choice Award, sponsored by Beverly Skidmore of Century 21 Lanthorn Real Estate, and announced by show chair, claudia jean mccabe, right.

A painting titled ‘The Road Taken’ by County artist Susan Straiton was voted the ‘Peoples’ Choice’ at the conclusion of the 20th Annual Art in the County Juried Exhibition & Sale.

The People’s Choice Award is presented annually to the artist whose work receives the most votes from visitors to the show. This year, more than 2,000 visitors came to the show and cast a vote.

“I believe that it is important for me as a painter to convey to the viewer of art the same awestruck wonder and passion I experience when I see a raging storm or a serene calm,” Straiton said in her artist’s statement. “In two words, my work is straightforward and sincere. It is a reflection of the spiritual connection, the joy, and the enthusiasm that is my experience with the environment. I live and breathe the land, the lake, and the sky, and the exhilaration I feel in this inhalation is expressed in my first language … paint.”

Beverly Skidmore of Century 21 Lanthorn Real Estate Ltd. has sponsored this award for several years.

“We have such a vibrant arts community in Prince Edward County,” she said. “I am honoured to support it and present this award on behalf of everyone who cast their vote. It is an affirmation for the artist that their work speaks to such a broad audience.”

Since 1993, the annual Art in the County Exhibition and Sale has showcased the highest quality works of art by the artists and artisans who live in Prince Edward County, attracted thousands of visitors to the show, and generated important opportunities for the County’s finest artists and artisans.

Presented by The Prince Edward County Arts Council, the show ran from June 27th to July 14th upstairs above Books & Company in Picton.

I’m so thrilled this unassuming paiting won the People’s Choice! Perhaps like many others, I voted for it because it looks exactly like the bend at the beginning of my own driveway – sunlight and shade captured beautifully. Congratulations!

Congratulations, Susan! You have such an amazing ability to capture the beauty and mystery of so-called ordinary scenes. Well deserved!
