Tips to make life difficult for criminals

PECM Hospital Foundation Executive Director Anna Marie Ferguson, left, and PECMH Auxiliary President Susan Law present guest speaker PEC OPP Constable Nicole Lott with the table centrepiece in thanks for an informative presentation.

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary proved once again its members have excellent timing when it comes to support, and safety.
At their luncheon meeting Friday they approved a $50,000 donation to the Picton hospital foundation after learning from executive director Anna Marie Ferguson that the surgery department is frantic to gain two more colonoscopes to keep up to the pace of being the main colonoscopy centre for QHC.
The auxiliary donation will cover the cost of one colonoscope and the Foundation, which is already tasked with funding $415,000 in equipment needs, will cover the cost of the second.
Auxiliary member Fran Renoy spoke in favour of the auxiliary’s support. “We are all at the age where we are, or should be, having colonoscopies. And since Picton hospital is the colonoscopy capital of QHC, it would be wonderful for the auxiliary to support this.”
The auxiliary’s timing was also bang-on to have invited PEC OPP Constable Nicole Lott to speak about common sense ways to keep safe in light of the meeting being held at the end of a full week of horrific daily news following the conviction of  former military colonel Russell Williams on charges of murder, sexual assault and forcible confinement and 82 break-ins.
“With everything that has gone on related to that case in the past week, we find it upsets a community as a whole,” said Lott. “It’s not something we would anticipate seeing here as it was such a unique case.”
Lott focused on common safety tips to combat common occurrences.

The PEC OPP are reviewing video from the camera at the PECM Hospital Auxiliary’s Second Time Around Store as part of their investigation into the dumping of items that should have been taken to the dump.

Last week, the auxiliary had to call the PEC OPP to investigate a “dumping” of unusable items at their Hospital Auxiliary Second Time Around Shop, downtown Picton. The surveillance video is under review and the investigation is continuing.
“How many of us don’t lock our cars?” Constable Lott asked, and nodded to acknowledge the show of hands. “And how many lock up our homes? I have forgotten. And I even have two dogs, but they’re useless. They’re not going to protect me.”
She told the auxiliary members to lock their doors, windows, the extra door going to the garage, but most importantly, the car.
“The car is often where we leave our wallets, purses, the GPS, our phone and where is all our personal information? – our birth certificates, health cards, social insurance numbers – right there.” She recommended people only carry necessary documents and lock up the rest at home, especially since identity theft cases have risen over the past three years.
Constable Lott also warned of credit card offers, or other mail that may contain personal information.
“Burn them, shred them. Don’t put any private documents in your garbage. There’s always people going through garbage to gain information.”
For computer users, she recommended staying with reputable companies for online shopping, noting that in this day of wireless internet there are people who spend 20 hours a day online to know everything. She noted one of her tasks at schools is to remind students about online safety.”
“Reputable companies are not going to ask you for passwords, etc., They already know these things.”
She also touched on 900 telephone number and home improvement scams, money contests, Nigerian emails, frauds by telephone and email, false charities, inheritance scams, lottery emails and vacation prizes by phone and email.
“Money is never easy, never quick or painless. Do a little research and don’t take anything at face value.”
