Tweed sends $27,000 in support for County’s new Syrian Canadians

Unable to secure affordable housing, the Tweed Refugee Sponsorship Committee has forwarded its $27,000 in fundraising to PEC Syria.
“They hoped to raise enough money to sponsor a Syrian refugee family to resettle in the Tweed community – and they did thanks to the enormous generosity of the entire Tweed community,” said Kathleen Powderley, co-chair, PEC Syria. “The group came to understand that despite their incredible efforts, this dream of sponsorship would not happen.”
Powderley noted that after reviewing several options – including supporting government sponsored Syrian refugees already in Canada, last week, the Tweed committee voted to donate their funds to PEC Syria’s community volunteer and fundraising organization that has already settled three Syrian refugee families in the County and surrounding areas.
“PEC Syria is so very grateful that they considered our group worthy of this generous donation,” said Carlyn Moulton, Co-Chair of PEC Syria. “Through this gift, the Tweed Refugee Sponsorship Committee has given PEC Syria the ability to do much more in assisting families to resettle in our area. The dedicated volunteers and donors of the Tweed Refugee Sponsorship group can rest assured that every cent will go to the families, to helping the new Syrian Canadian children grow and prosper and to their families’ overall health and wellbeing.”
PEC Syria also thanked the hard working and dedicated volunteers and donors of the Tweed Refugee Sponsorship Committee and St. John’s United Church.
“There was an overwhelming desire of our group to support another nearby sponsorship group and PEC Syria was a top choice because we recognize their good work to date and have complete trust in the organization,” said Barbara Goode of the Tweed Sponsorship Committee.
PEC Syria is a team of the Ryerson University Life Line Syria Challenge.

I would hope that our community would thank the people of Tweed in an official manner. They sure deserve that kind of recognition.
This is very cool. Thank you Tweed!
