Voluntary road toll to support school nutrition program Nov. 28

A voluntary road toll at one of Picton’s busiest intersections is to be set up Tuesday, Nov. 28 to raise funds for the “Feed the Meter” school nutrition campaign.

Following consultation with the County and the OPP, The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation is setting up the toll at the intersection of Lake Street, Talbot Street, and County Road 33 near the LCBO. Motorists are advised to drive with caution.

All proceeds collected during the toll will help support the Food for Learning program that works to ensure all local students have daily access to healthy nutritious food while at school.

In addition to the voluntary road toll, the Feed the (parking) Meter campaign returns in December.

While parking in Picton is free of charge beginning Dec. 1, drivers are encouraged to continue to “feed the meter” during the month with all money going to Food for Learning.

Free parking in Picton, both along Picton Main Street and Market Lane, is to continue until March 31, 2024.

I agree. It presents a dangerous location and puts undo pressure intended or not on those unable to contribute.

Is it really a good idea to use a major intersection for this initiative?…..not sure this was well planned….everyone has their hand out at what is already a difficult financial time- it’s hard enough to keep gas in my car, and now I’ll be stopped, solicited for $$ and my car idling…..this is all wrong – there are other means of asking for donations for a worthy cause.
