Anglers hoping to reel in big ones for Walleye World fishing derby

Midnight rings in the 39th Annual Kiwanis Walleye World Fishing Derby on the waters of the Bay of Quinte this weekend. And while the thousands of anglers who participate don’t seem to mind, the rain is supposed to clear up for the weekend.

The County’s Terry Mindle caught his derby winning 12.69 pound walleye in Picton Bay.

Last year, the County’s Terry Mindle landed the big prize for top walleye, weighing in a 12.69 lbs, earning him a $15,000 boat, motor, trailer and accessories.

Ethan Caley, of West Lake, just missed winning his fourth straight derby last year, catching a 9.85 pound pike in the Junior category.

The Kiwanis derby is a massive fundraising effort by the Trenton Kiwanis Club, and assisted by the Picton Kiwanis, to help raise money for community projects, most specifically for youth.

Anglers are vying for boats, motors and trailers in the top prizes again this year, as well as vacation packages at Merland Park; fishing charters, gear, kayaks, TVs, bicycles and tablets.
