Want to run for council? Learn what to expect if you’re elected

People thinking about running for Prince Edward County council in October’s election are invited to attend a free workshop Monday, March 28.
The workshop is to cover all aspects of running for municipal council as well as what to expect if you are elected.
Fred Dean, an expert in municipal government, will lead the workshop. Some of the topics covered include:
Key election dates and terminology, responsibilities of the mayor, council members, and staff; municipal powers and how they are exercised, code of conduct and the role of council’s integrity commissioner; legislation related to municipalities and elections and conflict of interest rules.
The workshop is to be held in-person March 28, 2022 at 6:30 p.m., at the Highline Hall inside the Wellington and District Community Centre (111 Belleville Street). Attendees must follow the COVID-19 public health measures in place at the time of the meeting.
Advance registration is required as space is limited. Contact elections@pecounty.on.ca by noon on Monday, March 28 to register. If you have questions, contact the clerk’s office by email, or call 613.476.2148, extension 1020.
The next municipal election is to be held on Monday, Oct. 24. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) has launched a “We All Win,” campaign to encourage more diversity in the upcoming 2022 municipal elections.

Agree with Fred, but I would say 5 Councilors, 1 Deputy Mayor, 1 Mayor, no wards.
Crazy how big our council is. They always promise to reduce but once they get in there. Agreed maybe it is not council’s decision to reduce council. Voters have supported the size reduction. Just never come to fruition.
I agree that the Province should step in and also correct the lack of appropriate voter representation in a single tier government.
Way past time to get rid of the Ward system. It’s one County. Each Councilor makes decisions affecting us all so why not have the right to elect who is there making those decisions. 7 Councilors, 1 Deputy Mayor, 1 Mayor, all elected at large. That would be real progress and allow residents to have a voice on every individual who chooses to run.

I think councils are incapable of appropriately dealing with this matter as already proven. They are too personally invested. It’s time this went directly to the province to correct. They cut Toronto’s Council in half they can surely do it here.
I too read the article in The Times – let’s hope that the new council will start the process – or possibly even this council if they have the nerve for it. I have followed this issue for well over 10 years – the decision for a smaller council should have been made years ago! A population of only 24K does not need 14 councillors. The Times suggests that 7 (including the mayor) – would be enough. Personally, I believe that dividing the County into 4 equal wards (based on population) – having 2 councillors for each ward + the mayor = 9 councillors.
If a council is incapable of doing this work, then we should appeal to the Province. The public sometime ago vote over 80% for a real change – it went ignored.
I know it’s an old tired topic but the Wellington Times article on the size of our Council is well worth the read.
I certainly hope that all of the people who regularly complain on countylive.ca articles about council, will attend this workshop and consider actually running for office.
If nothing changes, well, nothing will change.
