Ward, Macdonald continue reign as Picton Golf Club Champions

Casey Ward, Women's Champion and Club Champion John Henry Macdonald with John David Lipson who won the club championship 50 years ago as an 18-year-old.

The Picton Golf and Country Club hosted its annual Club Championship tournament Aug. 21-22.  This was the 103rd time the event has been played at the Club since its founding in 1907.

Casey Ward is once again the Women’s Champion  shooting a two-day total of 156 to win this event for the fourth year in a row.  Runner up was Connie Gallager.

Winning the Club Championship, with a two-day total of 148 is  John Henry Macdonald, who has won three of the last four years.  John Haynes was the
runner up.

One of the highlights of the weekend event was the participation of John David Lipson who won the club championship 50 years ago as an 18-year-old.  After winning the event a club record five years in a row ( 1960 – 1964 ) Mr Lipson did not play again until this year.  Reflecting on the weekend he said ” I have wonderful  memories of playing some fine
champions in the 60s: Keith Maddox, Lou Garrison, Leo St. Denis, and Pierce Jones. While I regret I didn’t play well this weekend I had a great time and will be back next year.  It was an honour for me to stand beside this year’s champions.”

Larry Richardson, President of the Club, commenting on the weekend event said, ” We had a wonderful club championship this year.  There were 88 golfers in the tournament, with four levels for men and three for the ladies. Thankfully the weather cooperated, the course was in great shape, and we were able to finish in good time. All participants are to be congratulated. for doing their best”

Runner up – Rick Dunn

The Picton Golf and Country Club also gained recognition throughout Eastern Ontario when Larry Richardson and Barry Denman won the annual
tournament hosted by the Regional National Golf Course Association played at the Castleview Club located east of Ottawa.  The Picton team shot a
total of -11 to win the event held Aug 16th.
