And they’re off… for the Bay of Quinte provincial election

The provincial election writ dropped Wednesday, May 9 and the most high profile candidates in the Bay of Quinte riding are already well into their campaigns.
Campaign offices are open and candidates are knocking on doors and having lawn signs placed.
Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario dissolved the 41st Parliament May 8 and named Thursday, June 7 as the date for the next general election.
The first televised debate included Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne, PC Leader Doug Ford and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
ALL CANDIDATES’ MEETINGS
Thursday, May 24 6-7 p.m. Empire Theatre, Belleville
Tuesday, May 29 6-9 p.m. Trenton High School
Wednesday May 30 7-9 Regent Theatre, Picton
Thursday, May 31 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at the Eastminister United Church in Belleville for a special session dedicated to poverty and health issues.
BAY OF QUINTE PROVINCIAL ELECTION CANDIDATES
TODD SMITH (incumbent, Progressive Conservative)
Todd was elected to represent Prince Edward – Hastings riding in 2011. He is Energy Critic and has served as the Critic for Small Business and Red Tape with the Official Opposition and was named a member of the PC Caucus Job Creation Task Force and is an active member of the PC Outreach Team. Todd has also served as a member of the Standing Committee on General Government. Todd is the Critic for Citizenship and Immigration, as well as the Chair of Outreach.
He moved to Belleville from Riverview, New Brunswick in the early 1990s. He lives in the Oak Hills with his wife Tawnya, a local high school teacher, and his two daughters Payton and Reagan.
Todd coached the Belleville Bearcats Minor Hockey Association and has served with the Quinte chapter of the ALS society, Operation Red Nose Quinte and dozens of other organizations. He also served on the Loyalist College Advisory Board since graduating there in 1994. Prior to his election, Todd was with Quinte Broadcasting for more than 16 years, where he held the News Director position for CJBQ, Mix 97 and Rock 107. Todd has also served as the Belleville Bulls play-by-play announcer on the OHL Tonight on TV Cogeco.

ROBERT QUAIFF (Liberal)
Robert is the current Mayor of Prince Edward County. He has a strong record of dedication and vocally advocating for community concerns.
As mayor, he worked to build a new fire and emergency medical facility, redevelop the Main Street in Picton and invested to improve roads and housing.
Robert served on the board of directors for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and was Chair of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus. He was President of the Picton Rotary, served as Chair of the local police services board and presently continues to sit on this board.
Born and raised in Prince Edward County, Robert graduated from Loyalist College, worked as a professional welder and later as a financial advisor for SunLife. He and his wife Susan live in Picton. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

JOANNE BELANGER (NDP)
For almost four decades, Joanne has been a defiant social justice advocate keen on representing the Bay of Quinte community with Ontario New Democrats at Queen’s Park.
She has been a counselor for more than 25 years, currently serving her 12th year as the Chaplaincy Leader at Nicholson Catholic College.
She is an active member of the Quinte Arts Council and former chair of the Quinte Coordinating Committee Against Violence.
When not serving those in need, Joanne can be found coaching rowing in the Bay of Quinte area, or spending time with her husband Terry and their seven children.
