Youth jobs and training get $2.5M boost in Bay of Quinte region

Youth job and training opportunities got a $2.5 million boost in the region in an announcement today by Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis.

The funding goes to the Prince Edward Learning Centre ($899,946); META Employment Services in Belleville ($1,225,000) and Youth Habilitation Quinte, in Belleville ($429,899).

“This past year, young Canadians have been on a very challenging path due to the COVID-19 crisis. Right now, youth in the Bay of Quinte are looking for safe and secure jobs,” said Ellis. “Our investments in young people across the country through the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) are making a difference. And with its record-setting number of job opportunities this year, the Canada Summer Jobs program is there to help young Canadians support themselves, grow professionally and move forward in their lives. I strongly encourage those looking to visit Job Bank online and check out the opportunities available for them in their community.”

Funding for the Prince Edward Learning Centre will help about 60 youth between the ages of 18 and 30.

Chris Durant, Inspire Co-ordinator says they’ve youth join the program overcome, sometimes big obstacles, and build careers that stick.

“At a time when the unemployment rate is going up and when it feels like there are fewer opportunities for youth in our communities – creating choice, options and opportunities and hope for the future is a big deal right now.”

Executive Director Kathy Kenndy says the YESS program is flexible and allows youth to explore a variety of career pathways.

“Placements are long enough for youth to get a real sense of what a job entails, and wrap-around support means participants are not so easily derailed when difficulties come up.”
