Golden Girls bridge club gives PEC Alzheimer Society a hand

P1010754Fran Renoy, on behalf of the Golden Girls Bridge Club, presented Laura Hare, Executive Director of  the Prince Edward Alzheimers Society with a donation of $500. Club members recently held a Bridge Luncheon to raise funds for the local organization. Renoy said she hoped other clubs and groups would consider holding their own events in support of the work of the Alzheimer Society in the County.  She also noted thanks to Don and Roy of the Portabella Bistro for once again contributing to the fundraiser.

Alzheimer jewels

For Mother’s Day this year, celebrate all that they do, not only for you personally, but for the community as a whole. The Alzheimer Society has hand-crafted jewellery by La La Land Glass Studio to support work of the society in Prince Edward. $22 each at the Alzheimer office at the corner of King and Paul Streets in Picton 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you cannot visit during those times, call 467-2085 to make arrangements.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive degenerative disease that attacks the brain and is not a normal part of aging.
“Dr. Robert Hopkins, Queen’s University, states that there are more than 540 people identified in Prince Edward County living with some form of dementia,” says PEC society president Jon Leavens. “In 10 years he estimates that that number will jump to 740. By 2030 that number will have leapt to 1,022. Our challenge is to keep up with the growing number of people who will need support.  It is so easy to run into people whose families have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In fact it is becoming difficult to find people who have not.”

Current services include support through groups for the individual with Alzheimer’s and family caregivers; a resource centre;  public education and awareness. The Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward County has donated more than $45,000 to research over the years.

Learn about the society’s programs and services at their office, located at the corner of King and Paul streets in Picton. Call: 613-476-2085.
