Baby food drive runs Mother’s Day to Father’s Day

The Community Development Council of Quinte (CDC-Q) is launching its 15th annual ‘Feed Our Future’ baby food drive – but it’s a first time drive to benefit babies in Prince Edward County.
The Good Baby Box Program provides baby food, formula, diapers and other baby care items at reduced cost to anyone with a child under the age of two. The program opened at The Hub Child & Family Centre at 10 McFarland Court in Picton April 15th.
“With new funding we received from United Way this year, we have opened a new Good Baby Box depot in Prince Edward County and because of this we are expecting a greater need,” said Ruth Ingersoll, Executive Director. “We have wanted to expand into Prince Edward County for a long time, so this is very exciting for us. We know that the food insecurity and low income rates are just as high there.”
“We are very excited to offer the Good Baby Box Program through our centre,” said Susan Quaiff, Deputy Executive Director of The Hub at the opening of the depot. “We have hundreds of families accessing our centre each year, so it’s a natural fit.”
The CDC has a goal of 4,620 jars of baby food, which represents a 10 per cent increase of the number of jars istributed last year. In 2013, the Good Baby Box program distributed 4,309 Good Baby Boxes to 918 families, representing 1,523 children in Hastings County.
The CDC is asking everybody to get involved – businesses, the faith community, schools, neighbourhoods or family members.
“It may seem like a small gesture,”, says Ingersoll, “but it’s all about building community and everyone doing their part…one jar at a time.”
The food drive runs from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day – May 11th-June 15th.

Donations of baby food, or monetary, can be dropped off at The Hub Child Care Centre, 10 McFarland Court, Picton or at the CDC main office at 65 Station St., Belleville (rear entrance).
