Musicians for Mt. Tabor on Regent Stage Monday night

“Musicians for Mt. Tabor” will gather on the big stage at The Regent Theatre to help Prince Edward County’s other great theatre – the Mt. Tabor Community Playhouse in Milford.

The former church was recently found to need extensive renovations to satisfy fire regulations and resulting building code issues, and although the Prince Edward County municipality has completed some of them, the South Marysburgh community and Mt. Tabor users stepped forward with proposals to help with the project.  The TaborFix Committee was formed and fundraising efforts began.
A successful community auction recently raised several thousand dollars.  The Marysburgh Mummers, whose official home has been Mt. Tabor Theatre for the last 25 years, have committed upward of $10,000 to the upgrades in the theatre.
And it seemed only natural for local performers to do what they do best – produce a fundraising concert.

“We’re extremely grateful The Regent Theatre board offered to help,” says concert producer Lori Farrington. “They generously offered to partner with TaborFix in our efforts and as a result, we’ll be performing on their stage. It’s a case of theatre helping theatre, and it means that we have more seats available for the show.”

The date picked for “Musicians for Mt. Tabor” is Monday, June 13th and will feature The Frere Brothers with Jake deVries, Grampa’s Goodtime Gang, Bill Ostrander, Suzanne Pasternak, Lenni Stewart, Loraine Sine, Jerry Foster, Amy Sedore, Seventh Town, Penny and John Kitchen, and Jennifer Noxon. Rick Zimmerman and Janet Kellough have agreed to emcee the show.

Over the years, Mt. Tabor Playhouse in Milford has played host to an astounding variety of musicians, actors and performers, drawn by its intimate atmosphere and cozy ambience, and it is this mood that “Musicians for Mt. Tabor” hopes to recreate.

“We decided to focus on performers who have an association with Mt. Tabor and a style that lends itself to an informal, kitchen-party style of concert,” Farrington says. “I expect there will be a lot of hand-clapping, foot-stomping and really bad jokes – the kind of laid-back, informal atmosphere that puts everybody in a really good mood.”

The concert will also have a specific fund-raising goal. Back in 1865, when Mt. Tabor church was built, it seemed only natural to have the front doors open in, but modern fire regulations require them to open out. This means that the front step needs to be re-built to accommodate the change.

“Our immediate goal is to take care of the steps,” Farrington says. “If we raise more than that, there are still several renovation items that need to be addressed, and we’ll put it toward one of those.”

The doors at the Regent Theatre open at 7 p.m. on June 13th, with curtain time for “Musicians for Mt. Tabor” at 7:30. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Hicks’ General Store, Milford; Wight’s Greenhouses, Wellington; Scott’s Store, Picton; and at the Quinte Arts Council, Belleville.
