Prince Edward County youth played in the big leagues Friday when they met the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
The Toronto Blue Jays Winter Tour kicked off Friday featuring players and personnel from the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club and Rogers Sportsnet. The trip to the opening day event was organized by Matt Ronan of County Baseball.
Blue Jays Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil, J.P. Arencibia and Travis Snider highlight the tour in addition to new manager John Farrell and pitching coach Bruce Walton. Rogers Sportsnet personalities Jamie Campbell and Buck Martinez were also participating in the tour which sees stops in Toronto, Kitchener/Waterloo, Calgary and Vancouver .
More than a dozen County athletes between the ages of 8 and 14 met at the Rogers Centre for an amateur baseball skills clinic for about 200 players. They received instruction directly from Toronto Blue Jays instructors and players – including Vernon Wells and Adam Lind. Participants rotated through various stations and learned tips on fielding, hitting and base running.
The Winter Tour is reminiscent of the Blue Jays caravan that frequently made cross-country trips during the late 1970s and ’80s.
