art-in-the-county-2016The County’s premier exhibition showcasing local artists unveiled its plans for this summer’s 23rd annual event.

Art in the County, an annual juried exhibition and sale presented by the Arts Council, expects to welcome its 50,000 visitor this year.

“This is a major signature evnt for the community,” said event co-chair Sue Barclay, who is also chair of the Arts Council. “Its scope has extended incredibly over the past 23 years having sold almost $250,000 in artwork and showcasing nearly 2,000 works.”

Art from range of media is presented – including paintings in oil, encaustic, watercolour and acrylic and works in glass, fibre, ceramics, pottery, mixed media, photography, wood, fabric art and sculpture.

Three renowned Canadian art professionals will serve as jurors this year, presenting five awards and five honourable mentions. Adam Welch is associate curator, Canadian art, at the National Gallery of Canada; Neville Smith is a fellow with the Society of Graphic Design of Canada and Su Sheedy is an artist from Kingston with experience as a curator and juror.

“The credentials of these three are indeed impressive,” said Annik Despres, co-chair. “We are honoured to have them helping to shine a spotlight on the many talented artists and artisans that make up the fabric of Prince Edward County.”

The Otto Rogers Award of Excellence and Peoples’ Choice awards will also be presented.

Art in the County promotions this year will also “paint” County artists in a bright, whimsical light.

Picton Home Hardware is the presenting sponsor of a County-wide “CANvas the County” promotion in which arts council members will use a variety of mediums to create unique paint cans that will be showcased from June 15-July 10 in high-traffic businesses throughout the County. Customers will be welcomed to enter a ballot into the can to win it and will also be encouraged to visit Art in the County June 24 – July 10.

A promotion with the County’s accommodation locations will also promote the show with door hangers and rack cards. For more, visit www.artinthecounty.com
